Woken up with a stiff and painfully neck?

Whether it’s from sleeping in a funny position, feeling stressed out, or maybe even from a sports injury a stiff neck is never fun. It is something many of us have to deal with at some point in our lives.

I know how frustrating and painful it can be, so I want to share some personal tips and remedies that can be highly effective.

What’s Going On?

A muscle spasm can feel painful make you alter how you move how you turn your head, the good news is it’s usually not an emergency and time will heal this. A massage will shorten the length of time required for recovery.

Here’s what you might be feeling:

– Tight muscles– Difficulty moving your head– A tingling sensation or numbness in your neck, arms, or shoulders– Pain that gets worse when you go about your daily activites or hold your head in one position.

If you have other symptoms i.e. like nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion, or a really bad headache that won’t go away, these need to be investigated and it’s important to see a doctor right away. These could be signs of something more serious.

My Remedies for Stiff Neck Relief

If it’s just a typical stiff neck, here are my favourite at-home remedies that I always recommend:

1. Apply Ice: I suggest using an ice pack for about 5 to 10 minutes 3 times daily for 24 hours. This can help bring down any inflammation.2. Take Anti-Inflammatory Painkillers: If you’re comfortable with it, something like Nurofen can really help manage the pain and reduce swelling.3. Book a Massage: Of course, I’m a big believer in the power of massage! It’s not just about relieving the tension in your neck, but also easing up the tightness in other parts of your body as it stiffens to protect your neck.4. Switch to Heat: After the initial pain (24-36 hours) has calmed down, applying heat can work wonders. Using heat and ice in combination (hot / cold) squeezes the muscle removing damaged blood and tissue followed by heat that then floods the area with new blood cells to aid recovery.

How to Preventing a Stiff Neck in the Future

Prevention is key, so here are some tips to help keep that stiff neck at bay:

– Posture: Poor posture is the biggest issue when it comes to muscular tension. Make sure you’re sitting and standing correctly.– Use the right Pillow for you: Your pillow makes a big difference! A contoured pillow can help as it helps to aligned your head with your body while you sleep. However we are all so different and therefore one size fits all isn’t the approach either.– Stress Relief: Stress leads to muscle tension, so it’s important to take care of yourself. Regular hot baths, massage therapy, yoga, and meditation are some ideas.– Use your body, be physical: movement of your body, I love walking, yoga or Pilates, start small and build up. This is both de stressing and physical which will help your sleep patterns. A good night’s sleep is the best remedy for most of what ails us.

Stretching through the pain will not help in the beginning. Be careful with stretching when you have a stiff neck. Overstretching can cause more tension and lock things up even more. Stick to what works and don’t overdo your recovery, and your neck should start to feel better within a couple of days.
